John Beumer III’s unwavering dedication to the field of Maxillofacial Rehabilitation has significantly shaped the discipline throughout his distinguished career. In 1976, he founded the Maxillofacial Prosthodontic Center at the UCLA School of Dentistry, a pioneering institution that has trained over 125 maxillofacial prosthodontists over four decades. His international acclaim as a leader in this field is firmly established, not only through his direct contributions but also through his mentorship and editorial leadership. Beumer co-authored the first edition of this textbook alongside Drs. Curtis and Firtell, solidifying its position as the cornerstone for maxillofacial rehabilitation. As editor of subsequent editions and now as Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Beumer continues to play a pivotal role in advancing interdisciplinary care, having mentored Drs. Sharma and Jayanetti to co-edit this 4th edition.

The rehabilitation of patients with head and neck disabilities remains one of the most complex challenges in medicine, requiring close collaboration across multiple disciplines. This interdisciplinary approach, which synthesizes the knowledge of various healthcare professionals into a cohesive treatment plan, is essential for restoring both the form and function of these patients. This edition particularly underscores the importance of digital technologies, which have seen a dramatic increase in their application in prosthodontics and maxillofacial prosthetics (MFP) in recent years. Advances in digital imaging, computer-aided design (CAD), and 3D printing have revolutionized how we assess, plan, and execute treatment for our patients. These technologies have not only improved precision and outcomes but have also enhanced the overall efficiency of treatment processes.

As always, the prosthodontist plays a vital role in restoring oral function, yet effective contributions to the rehabilitation process require a deep understanding of the broader surgical, oncological, and reconstructive landscape. This edition reflects the latest advancements in surgical techniques, digital technologies, and psychosocial considerations, ensuring that every aspect of patient care is addressed with the most current and sophisticated strategies. We are grateful for the contributions of all who have helped expand our vision of comprehensive, interdisciplinary maxillofacial rehabilitation.
