Providing respiratory assistance and mechanical ventilation in neonates and children with different pathologies remains a difficult task for most physicians, despite extensive ICU training. A profound understanding of respiratory physiology and respiratory mechanics in different lung conditions is required, and also a good knowledge of all the instruments available to us. Analysing the interactions between the child and the ventilator, observing their physiological responses to our interventions, and knowing how to best apply the technology and advanced monitoring tools available is what matters the most at the bedside.

“This completely updated 2nd English version of the “Handbook of mechanical ventilation in Paediatrics” is based on the 5th Spanish edition of the handbook from the Respiratory Group of the Spanish Paediatric Intensive Care Society (SECIP- Sociedad Española de Cuidados Intensivos Pediátricos) released in 2018. It has been completely re-edited with the contribution of members of different Sections of the European Society of Paediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care (ESPNIC) and many professionals of paediatric and neonatal intensive care units from around the world.
