For years, infectious disease experts warned that we were overdue for a pandemic. They were right. When COVID-19 struck, I recalled the Great Influenza Pandemic of 1918 (often mislabeled as the “Spanish flu”). There were four waves of recurrence through 1920, and it wasn’t until the mid-1920s that the pandemic was felt to be “over.” Naively, I assumed the COVID-19 pandemic wouldn’t last that long because we are smarter now and science has progressed! But we repeated many of the struggles faced during that historical episode, including denials about the seriousness of the situation and misinformation about causes, preventive measures, and treatments. During both pandemics, low-income and minoritized communities suffered disproportionately.
